Day 2 - Jom Makan! Penang Food @ Padang Kota Lama, Pulau Pinang (November 2011)

Assalamualaikum,

Kalau dah jalan-jalan especially bawa budak-budak main-main mestilah dah penat. Haruslah pergi makan-makan kan? =) So if one is in Penang, it is a tourist-must-do to eat the infamous Penang delicacies at Padang Kota Lama. As for me hot and yummy Char Kuey Teow & Pasemboq were already moving around in my head, and tummy. So being in the birthplace of these 2 dishes, expectations were high especially I cannot recall when was the last time I ate here. Or ever.

Clean food court next to the sea.

Packed.

Check out the queue for the most famous stall of Pasembur here. Sedap tak sedap tak sure tapi since everybody queues there we follow suit. Sedaplah kot compared to other stalls. Maybe.

That guy looking towards me, he was quite a looker. Quite, I am not saying he's much of a looker. Funny thing was he thought I was snapping his photo he actually smiled while all along I was snapping for blogging material. Adehhhh.

SOTONG! And Kangkung. Haha.

Orders taken.

Some of us just wanted Fried Rice, and I must say this stall serves good Fried Rice with the cheapest price compared to other stalls which literally ketuk the customers.

Ummi's expression is always priceless.

Nasi Goreng Cina (Chinese Fried Rice) - RM 4

Good price, good taste.

Aira our responsible waitress for the Pasemboq orders. =D

Pasembur (2 Plates) - RM 40

I am not sure whether they are well-priced but the Pasembur tasted great.

Char Kuey Teow - RM 10

Taste, so-so, ok but Mali Char Kuey Teow is the best. And this is too expensive since it's not like Mali's CKT Special at then Taman Bunga Raya now at Platinum Walk, Setapak which are loaded with prawns.  I mean tourists go to food courts with no air-conditioned to expect cheap price, I mean especially with low income huge families, RM 10 per head for example? Well you do the Math.

Rasa seriously ok-ok je.

Kerang Rebus (Boiled Cockles) - RM 10

Even Kerang was RM 10?! I know cockles are more expensive these days but their excuse for the price was because it has dried squid underneath.

Sotong Kangkung

I can't recall the price but it was after much negotiation of the amount we wanted and the price we were willing to pay. The stall operators really took the opportunity to charge as high as possible on tourists.

So yeah taste-wise, you can get better at other places, at better prices. Nothing to shout about here except the Pasemboq I guess.  Below are photos of a Jeruk Buah (Fruit Pickle) stall. People often say you should buy Buah Pala (Nutmeg) when you come to Penang. I did not buy any, but I do like Nutmeg Ointment (very very soothing) which they sell as well.  =)

As usual, thanks for reading. =)

XOXO,
Sue
