Salam,
I tried this Kopitiam when I was working at Enserv and I kind of like the food here. I know there are many Kopitiams but this one well I guess it is one of the ones that offer lots of choices in the menu. However this time when I dined with Ummi and Nana was before the whole fuss of Halal certificate issue came, and Hailam kopitiam is one of the ones NOT LISTED under the JAKIM halal permit list. This one has the halal logo from the South East Asian Halal Council if I am not mistaken, which to me is totally unreliable anyway, for me JUST the AUTHENTIC HALAL LOGO from JAKIM is to be trusted. *sigh* I don't understand how come the Halal logo is an issue in Malaysia, I just hope that JAKIM will be stricter, if the restaurant owners don't apply for the Halal certificate from JAKIM, just put up a NON-HALAL sign in front of their shop, surely they'll be running to the JAKIM office to apply I bet. *wink*
Anyway, seriously the problem is getting serious since the employees are also non-Muslims since they come from Myanmar and Vietnam, so yes very unreliable. For instance Ummi just would not eat at a Kopitiam anymore except for coffee and toast.
The history of Hailam Kopitiam. It traced back to its origin in the very early of the past century, and though the Halal issue is questionable at this kopitiam, but just FYI a few royal members of Negeri Sembilan are the partners of this kopitiam since it's early days. At least there are involvement of Muslims here though not hundred percent reliable of course.
The awesome selection.
Ok check out what we had. Sorry no prices though Nana treated us on that day and she lost the receipt.
Thick and kickin'!
A recommended specialty here. I love it! The taste of the rice is unique and I like the idea of having fried onions on the steamed chicken. I prefer steamed chicken to roasted chicken for chicken rice. However my most favourite is the Steamed Chicken Rice from The Chicken Rice Shop, tastes just as good as the one at the cafe of Gleneagles' Medical Centre, Ampang. Unfortunately, I don't know why, Nana felt awfully dizzy after she ate this like awfully dizzy, she said maybe the starch in the rice was just too much for her.
Ummi ordered this. It's always a favourite of Ummi however, too bad she said the Hailam Mee here sucks she could not eat further. =( Like tasteless, just the taste of soy sauce.
Ok la, typical, I prefer the crinkle-cut fries better.
However, you can trust my word that you will not go wrong with this! The supposed to be the staple food for any kopitiam in the world, the Roti Bakar (Toast with Butter & Kaya) is the MOST TERRIFIC HERE! It's unbelievably hot (not cold which is so disappointing like at most kopitiam nowadays), and extremely crunchy like crackers and ahhhhhhh just heaven! We ordered more when we were with ayah and even this time. One set is just not enough!
Hehe, yes so if you come here, the number one recommendation would be its Roti Bakar. Common, ordinary, simple dish at its BEST taste =)
