Jom Makan! Hawker Stalls food @ Suzi's Corner, Ampang (Thursday, 10th April 2008)

Salam,

My best friend Ina stayed at our place for the weekend before she can return to UIA and start her internship at BERNAMA, Jalan Tun Razak.

Chicken Porridge, Otak-Otak & Grilled Chicken Wings stalls

So for dinner that night, I brought her to my favourite eating spot in Ampang, non other than Suzi’s Corner which is nearby Ampang Point & the now bankrupt shopping mall Kerry’s. Suzi’s Corner is owned by an Indian lady named Suzi (obviously) which sells the typical Indian/ Mamak food as well as Malay food. The nice part about Suzi’s Corner is, there are other owners who rent a stall or two to sell their own cooking. It now operates for 24 hours (similar to other Mamak eating places in KL) but usually it is the most crowded after 10pm. Yes us Malaysians have an around the clock eating habit, which is not good for the diet, but awesome for the rumbling tummies and taste buds.

Nasi Briyani & Sotong Kangkung stalls

The most famous stall must be the Western Grill which belongs to a Chinese lady. Of course, I always love its Grilled Chicken Chops. There is also an Italian food stall, Chinese porridge stall (Ummi absolutely loves the porridge because she said this is the authentic Chinese porridge, complete with salted egg and salted vege) as well as a Satay stall.

Since it is located in Ampang, it is nearby the many embassies and High Commissions there so Suzi’s Corner is so well-known with expatriates and their family members. The Western food is a hit among them, since you are able to get good, tasty western food with a very affordable price and not the pricey rates as usually found in posh restaurants and hotels. I read once in a magazine about the nice eating spots in KL, one expatriate remarked that Suzi’s Corner is her favourite since it is a place where you can get western food with good price along with Beer. Haha of course I am excluded in ordering the Beer, but just a piece of information of how well-known it is.

Yes in Suzi’s Corner as well, apart from the many foreigners dine here, is of course a place where you can check out the cutest and hottest guys in Ampang. :p So apart from the good food, you’ll be treated with eye candy as well .:p Yup, another interesting fact here is, since there is usually a number of good looking people here, it is not odd to see girls strut their stuff here by wearing the shortest mini skirts or shorts, be in their skimpiest tank tops and very high heels, in other words they would be in their clubbing gear. Just have to blend in with the crowd I guess. As for me, I always look the sloppiest in my thongs (slippers I mean) and anything which is comfortable enough to co-operate with me in expanding my waistline. Besides that, since there are many expatriates here, it is an ordinary scene to see even locals acting more ‘westernized’ than the foreigners, which is very nauseating to me most of the time. As Malays say it, menyampah. Hello, let the foreigners try to be us since they are here, no need to impress them by trying to be them. So no need to do all the nauseating PDA and beer drinking, and this public service announcement is dedicated to Muslims.

The pirated copy of 27 Dresses that I bought :p

Another familiar scenery at Suzi’s Corner is of course the pirated DVDs sellers around. I don’t usually purchase DVDs be it original or pirated, but that night I bought 27 Dresses since I really wanted to watch that movie. I really adore Katherine Heigl, of course based on her performance in Grey’s Anatomy, but yes I am guilty of purchasing a pirated DVD here. But hey at least I am not a hypocrite about it OK :p RM 10 for one DVD. :p

Ina waiting for her Grilled Chicken Chop

Enough briefing about the atmosphere of Suzi’s Corner, now let me share with you what we have ordered for the evening.

Hot Bun & Butter to start the main course

Grilled Chicken Chop
RM 9.90

Me: This is my favourite. I love the fact that it has boiled vegetables.

Ina: The chicken is juicy and I think the sauce is unique. Also the bread that comes as an appetizer is so tender and hot it’s awesome to be eaten with butter.

Ina enjoying her Chicken Chop

Beef Lasagna
RM 9

Me: This is the first time I ordered from the Italian food stall. I love lasagna and my favourite is always the one from Delifrance, but it is no harm to try this. I think it is rich with beef although a bit dry, but the mashed potato is nice. Anyways, I think they should make a prettier presentation, hodoh benar yang ni (This is really ugly).

Ina: It is yummy! It is rich with beef instead of just the pasta and flour. Yes it is ugly cannot deny that.

Also, there are always the beggars around, especially the blind ones. It is good if you have a heart of gold to give some money to them, but usually they come in a syndicate so think twice before you give. This is because I saw them being fetched with a car at a dark alley nearby once when I finished my dinner there, and hello if you could afford to own a car, you should not be begging around. I even once saw a ‘blind beggar’ DROVE a car, so lu pikir la sendiri (you think of it yourself) :p

Service rating: Usually, all the workers from each stall are very quick and efficient in their service. The Indian guys who work for Suzi's who attend us are always very friendly and the service is always so quick, which is not surprising at any Mamak place. The one who attended us that night even said I look so familiar to him like he saw me in a magazine or TV before, hehe so perhaps smalltime limelight does work as well ;)
