Salam,
Earlier that evening we wanted to head North to try one of Ummi's favourite food, Mee Udang or Prawn Noodles. Ummi kept an article she found in Utusan Malaysia of a Prawn Mee restaurant in Kuala Sepetang which is located on the way to Taiping. In the article it was stated that a restaurant named Mee Udang Mak Jah sells very scrumptious prawn noodles that you just cannot miss if you come to Taiping or nearby locations.
The specialty of Mak Jah's Prawn Noodles are in the XXL Size of the fresh-water prawns served to the customers. They are like so fresh and crazy big, as the article stated. Of course you know that when the prawns are fresh and so meaty then the gravy would have the extra subtle sweetness which makes the gravy so so tasty.
So that night, though we were heartily served with crazy delicious Lamb BBQ and the wedding's leftover rice at my client's house, we still left some room in our tummys for Mak Jah's Prawn Noodles. Another joke heard at the BBQ to remind you of how humorous the Perakians are. One man asked, "Kambin jenis apa ni? (What type of lamb is this?) " another answered, "Mestilah kambin mati.. (A dead one of course.)" Sigh.. =)
So around 9pm we headed to Kuala Sepetang, the town before Taiping which took us about an hour inclusive of our wrong turns. You really have to ask around for the direction since there is a high potential for anyone to miss its sign because most of the time you would see more of Taiping and Lumut on the signboards. Yup so after dropping by at a petrol station, we were given the direction to turn left from the Kuala Sepetang town and just drive ahead to your desired restaurant. Just bear in mind if you want to come here, only head to Taiping not Lumut ok.
Apparently there are tens of Mee Udang restaurants and all have large banners hanging in front of their restaurants claiming that theirs is the best. So Kuala Sepetang's specialty is Prawn Noodles. You could see various restaurants and a few even mentioned that their yellow noodles are hand-made by Muslims to certify its halal status. We bet that all these extra promotion must be since Mak Jah's has been in the newspaper so competition is tougher.
Well, our drive towards Mak Jah's was actually a creepy one since our journey was guided by very dim-litted road lights and sometimes none at all. Luckily Mak Jah went another level above than the rest when almost each kilometre of our journey would be guided with the signboards heading to her restaurant. You know like 'Another 10km more to Mee Udang Mak Jah, another 5 km more' and so on so you could just imagine how remote her restaurant is located.

Finally...we have made it to Restoran Mee Udang Mak Jah.
Indeed the crowd was many compared to the other restaurants that we passed. I saw many cars with KL, Johor, Terengganu plate numbers, perhaps coming to Perak to attend weddings or for a holiday and the newspaper article really gave a great publicity to Mak Jah's restaurant.
Quite unfortunately since we reached there around 10 p.m thus there were no more XXL size prawns left for us, all are finished. So we ordered 3 bowls of the normal Mee Udang which had 8-9 prawns in a bowl, priced at RM 7.00 each.
As for the XXL size prawns, the noodles are priced at RM 11 per bowl and consists of about 7 humongous prawns. Nice but just not our rezeki. Nevermind. We were informed by a waiter there that they opened business at 9 a.m till 10 p.m but if there are many customers especially during school holidays they may be opened till 1 a.m. Besides prawn noodles they also sell Char Kuey Teow and a various Fried Rice.
Regarding on the taste, the taste is exactly like Ummi's Prawn Noodles when she uses the Prawn Noodles paste from Cosway. The gravy is sweet just as how the taste of prawn noodles should be. Mak Jah's prawn noodles only have celery and chilli in it besides the prawns and noodles (or else it could not be defined as prawn noodles) and tofu was not even in the ingredients. However the portion of noodles was satisfactory. But of course the real specialty of this restaurant is because you would never ever get 7 XXL size prawns at RM 11.00 only so everybody of course would always looking forward to eating them here though the location is crazy far.
One very important matter I like to point out here is its cleanliness. Honestly the restaurant, well its cleanliness I think should be given a C at its best not even a B grade. This is because after customers left their tables, the waiters and waitresses did not really bother to pick up the dirty dishes (perhaps they are too exhausted or just could not care less) and worse the floor was literally full of cigarette buds and used serviettes.
In conclusion, the food and prices are good however we would not come back because if the dining area is dirty before the customers' sight, we could not imagine the 'cleanliness' at the kitchen. I hope that their cleanliness would improve to be at par with their food quality, especially it's a Muslim restaurant so good cleanliness is crucial.
